I've yet to read the fic (and based on how sad it sounds, I may not), so I'm going to take a guess at what it's about based on comments.

Reminds me of when my two kitties, which belonged to my family since before I was born and were my friends for the first sixteen years of my life, died four years ago, and it devastated me. It still hurts to think about it, but I'm always thankful that they taught me so many lessons about life; I credit them with contributing to who and what I am today.

I have to join in the majority concensus and say "Awwwwww...." too. Very heartfelt and caring here. Bubbles always struck me as someone that could cheer anyone up.
